I was assigned to the 9th Med from Sept 1967 to Sept 1968 in the Veterinary Section. I also did rabies exams, and processed human serum samples for scrub typhus, meliodosis, and leptospirosis. Also worked on war dogs and did food inspection. Went on medical courier runs to colect serums and dog heads at various bases becasue they weren't being properly packed in ice and spoiled. I had worked at WRAIR for one year before that for Dr. Marv Rogul. Right now, I am in Vietnam with my wife. We have been here since November, and return next month. She is a Speech Language Pathologist, and is volunteering in two schools for autistic children. We have connected with and made good friends with Nham Pham Thi and her big family. She worked at the 9th Med as a lab tech at Long Bien, and knows some of you all. (She fondly recalls you Keith!) Saigon is a place where the phrase "the past is another country" is truly seen. I am an environmental biologist, and am doing some environmental things here, and also writing. Anyone who has any questions, let me know.....We have made lots of friends here mostly becasue of my wife is a PIed Piper for children, and Vietnamese dote on their children....

I came out of the bush (11th light infantry) in '71. Assigned to camp alfa, Ton Son Nhat AF base and help set up the heroin test center. While there (PISS Unit) was OK. I was interested in finding the security patch (lost mine) or see it again.
Thanks Greg

Memory may not be exact. Around the first part of 1971 I was walking back to Dodge City from HQMACV and as I entered the back gate to the MACV Annex, I saw a huge ball of flame rise up from appeared to be the gate to TSNA. Actually, as I learned in the next days casualty report, a teenage sapper on a Honda 50 tried to throw a satchel bomb into 3rd field hospital on the street on the west side of the hospital. The bomb hit the chain link fencing shield and bounced back into the street about 10 ft. in front of his bike. It did no damage to the hospital, but it turned out to be a bad night for the sapper. Didn't find much of his Honda either.

i arrived at the 85th Evac hospital in 1970 to serve 11 months of my tour with the 9th Med Lab mobile. My primary lab duties included
Serving as the lead tech in the blood bank area , accounting for its inventory on a day to day basis, typing and cross matching units,
And drawing blood from soldier donors in the local are when fresh blood was needed. Screening slides for malaria I also remember well.Calt Bill Chrymes was the pathologist when I reported and
Carl Fuglie, his replacement was in charge when I left. I have fond memories of managing and playing on the lab's softball team wile there , remember Tina, and the young ducks Inraised while there.
Michael Wong and Asai Kamaie were long entrenched with the 9th when I reported and depareded much earlier then I. I left to return to base lab during my 11th month in country and went on to finish my tour in 2 yrs 9 monts after serving the remainder of my hitch 6 months at the 130th station hospital , Germany- a great place to be.
I was a Spec 5, now have 7 grandchildren, and retired from the VA NJ Healthcare System after seeing as the Chief Logistics Officer . I roomed with great comrades while at the 9th in RVN and remember fodly SP Osborne, Czarlenski, Sgt Oliver Penton, and Sp Powers- a pharmacist I believe per his civilian credentials. I all remember well Capt Jim Apland. I was proud to serve with the 9th through the Laos
Incursion- we all were dedicated to duty and did fine work.

Hello,I was assigned to 9ML but was sent to 3rd Field Hosp, April 1968 to May 1969. Ran the chemistry dept. Set up blood gases and introduced Levi-Jennings plots to QC in Chem. I used pooled blood bank plasma for control material, made up in 1-2 liter batches. Worked my butt off like everyone else. Chaplin assistant Ed Russell is currently writing a book on the history of 3rd Field Hosp. let me know if anyone wants to contribute to Ed's work and I will give you his e mail.

I just wanted to say thank you to all you wonderful folks, and the tender loving care you gave me, once upon a time in a land far far away. Having spent six weeks in your facility in mid-1970 , I can honestly say that in the hands of your professional doctors and compassionate nurses, I went from the point of wishing I was dead, to earnestly striving to get well. After returning home I graduated from a doctoral program, married, and had three children. I may not remember your names, but I have thought of you often, and always with the deepest respect and appreciation. May God bless you.

While at the 9th in Long Binh from Oct 71 to June 72 I recorded several musicians including myself, a Tech from the 24th Evac and a couple medics. There is a video on youtube/studio9ml with pictures of Terry Miles, John Salley, the dogs and others. More music at myspace/studioat9thmedlab with Terry singing, Terry and Lee Hayes arguing over an SOP and 2 medics that were really good! I started out in Shipping and Receiving riding unarmed shotgun with Salley picking up specimens in Saigon, eventually took over for Lee doing the Lepto and Melio testing in the Infectious Disease section. I really enjoyed viewing the reunion pictures and seeing how the people I knew have fared over the years. Take care, Everyone, and reminisce at youtube and myspace.

I arrived in Qui Nhon as the first enlisted man replacement at the 528th Med Lab. Tom Kennedy had been shipped with the unit with about 90 days left until his discharge date. Captain Robert Buchanan, MSC, was our Commanding Officer. I had just finished the Advanced Lab Procedures Course at Fort Sam Houston in Jan/65. Spent 10 months at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco before leaving for Vietnam. Rotated to the states after one year with the 528th. Was then stationed at the Fort Sill Hospital until I volunteered to go back to Vietnam. I was stationed from June/67 until June/68 with Company C 4th Med Bat, 4th Army at Pleiku. I extended my Vietnam tour and was transferred back to the 528th at Qui Nhon after a 30 day leave to Bangkok, Thailand. I spent several months there before being tranferred to the 9th Med Lab at Long Bihn. I was sent to the 946th as NCOIC until I returned to the states in June/69. I left the service as a SSGT(E-6), with nine years service.

I just discovered this web site for the 9th Med Lab. June of 1971 I was sent TDY to the 9th Med Lab. at the 6th CC in Cam Ranh Bay. I was a Spec. 5 at Letterman General working in the chemistry department/Morgue when I was DTYed to Cam Ranh. I spent the next 60 days at the 6th CC in a world that only you guys would understand. I was lucky, my wife was having our first baby, so when two replacments showed up at the 6th CC, I got one. I was sent back to Letterman, but was told I would be back for a full tour of duty in 30 days. That never happened. I spent the rest of my five years in the army at Letterman General. I have a short book I wrote about the drug patient riots, strike and oh yes, Vietnam's largest amno dump explosion. If anyone is interested in reading about the 6th CC e-mail me and I will e-mail you a copy of the book. Douglas E. Feay -dfeay@verizon.net P.S. Great site!

To all you fellow military service vets, thanks for all you've done, especially in your role as the people who valiantly put broken bodies and minds together, and helped save so many from their end. I didn't see a way to contact your Web master, but another reason for this message was to see if it would be okay to post your Saigon map on our Yahoo group. A bunch of fellow vets and I are with the Yahoo group simply called "CICV," the Combined Intelligence Center, Vietnam. We were "neighbors" with Third Field Hospital, but if you didn't know where we were, you'd never find us. For those at Third Field, you'd have to stand in front of the hospital and look about 250 yards beyond the open field directly across the street. Except our water tower, all buildings were just one story high, so that explains why you'd never be able to see us from the main drag. I shouldn't leave without saying how much we enjoyed patronizing your little club in the back of Third Field, "The Hut." We took generous advantage of your "Nickel-a-beer Nights" and bought plenty of pizzas too. It goes without saying: You 9th Med folks have a SUPERB Web site. God bless you all and thanks again for your service to our country. Tony

Just returned from Vietnam on the 31st Oct 2008. I had the pleasure on the 30th of going to the building that housed the 9th in 1966/1967. It is now a low income housing unit. The area is fully built up and finding it took a lot of research in advance and the help of Kim Binh, her cousin and their daughter and son-in-law. Pictures should be posted here soon. As a member of the 1st Med Lab, I was. of course, also interested in Phu Bai Combat Base and what might be left to see. NOTHING is the answer, it has all been reforested and an international airport has been built on the site of the Phu Bai Airfield. It is pleasant to see how well they have fixed it up. Hue is still the old and interesting place it was 39 years ago, I enjoyed. Hanoi, a modern cosmopolity city and very nice. Went by the Hanoi Hilton, which is now a museum and part of the property a new modern hotel. If you get the chance you should revist Vietnam, it is very interesting.

Worked as dispatcher in motor pool with 9th med and 20th preventative med. next to 24th evac. from feb.-sep. 1971. Fond memories of fellow troops in unit. Recall the continuos influx of grunts to detox next to our operations. The two(2) 25 foot pet pythons that liked to visit the mess hall. L.B.J. just down the road a half mile. The private area known as the circle where guys would commiserate and the card games at the E.M. club with an occasional adult film fest on holiday weekends. Seemed to be plenty of clandestine activity going on though I was rather naive to most of it. Things were a little chaotic as I got short. Seems like we were losing choppers daily and pulling guard duty by the helipads was memorable to say the least. Lindy Judson (worked at dispensary), Hal Rice, Lee Hayes, Jay Watson, Mike Dulac, Lyle Wright and others were terrific buddies. Often wonder about the classified ops that were going on and how much remains concealed from public knowledge. Happiest moment was catching that big bird out of Bien Hoa to go back to "the world."

I am part of the AMEDD Microbiology History Team and I would like to get in touch with any Army Microbiologists who served during the Vietnam era for the purpose of collecting oral histories and any documentation that may be added to our repository and possibly be included in future publications aimed at increasing public awareness of the contributions of Army Laboratory Scientists in the combat support operations. I would greatly appreciate any info that I can obtain from the 9th Med Lab Veterans or any others that visit this site.

Most of my unscheduled transportation to the boonies was by Huey (space-a), thanks to the 9th and dustoffs at Long Binh (between 69 and 71). Thanks for keeping the site up and running - the greatest.

With great sadness I pass on news of the passing of my father, COL Charles J. Davis Jr. Dad died on Tuesday, June 19th 2007, after a long battle with cancer. His last morning was quiet and restful; my brothers and I were at Dad's bedside that morning. The time he spent working with you was very special to him, and I know he maintained a special friendship with many of you over the years.

I was in Vietnam from June 68 to August 69. I was a photographer with a medical ilistration detatchment which was eventually transfered to the 9th Med in Long Binh. Spent most of my time there in the pathologist office and with the guys in the next room preparing slides. Would be glad to hear from anyone from that era.

I am hoping that some of you may be able to help me with some information on an explosion that happened in early to mid 1969 at the Dong Khanh hotel, I am doing research for a claim to the Australian Veterans affairs Dept. We struggle with claims here if we do not have more than even the relevant info regards and best wishes to all who served

Hi everyone. I spent one year stationed at 3rd Field Hosp. 6/71 to 5/72 as Captain (optometrist). I lived in Mass. BOQ next door. This site brought back lots of memories. Would love to hear from anyone who was there at that time or to visit a web site with pictures. Have often thought of going back but not sure I would recognize anything. Great site! I was stationed at HQUSMACV from 3/70 to 4/71. I lived in the Dodge City barracks and was assigned to the PSYOPs division in the headquarters. Your site brings back many memories, I remember a night at the outdoor theater when we heard small arms fire somewhere in the golf course, and we scattered and left the movie running by itself. What a night.

When Doc says he was shocked to see Tina, I am assuming he means the picture of her I had in the presentation at the 3rd reunion. Tina was originally obtained by Michael Wong and Asao Kamei from the troopers at the the 101st Airborne. They brought her to the 1st ML and asked if they could keep her as a mascot, she was just a puppy about 10 weeks as I remember. I had always wondered what happened to her when the 1st/9th ML Mbl left Phu Bai. One of the men was going to try and take her home, but evidentally it didn't work out. Glad to see she was given a home at the 85th and then with the Medical Company. By that time she would have been nearly 4 years old.

Hi Everyone ! I just wanted you all to know that I was shocked and very pleased to see TINA the mascot . I am pretty confident that we had the same dog named Tina . After the 85th evac stood down in the early part of 72 , Two doctors and a few medics, a x-ray tech. a pharmacist, and a dental assistant were reassined to the renewed 142nd Med. detachment in Phu Bai. Someone asked us if we would make Tina our mascot and we welcomed her to our family. She help us alot more than we helped her, so to say we took good care of her would be backwards. When I left in Sept of 72 she was doing great ! Still with the detachment and Dr. Carey L. Conyers (I think I spelt the Dr. name correctly. It

Came across your site while surfing the net in search of a map of Saigon. Hit the jackpot with your Saigon Facilities Map. Exactly what I was looking for!! I arrived in-country 9/69. Was in the Air Force teaching English to the VNAF. I first lived @ the Hung Dao (#40), then in barracks @ the MACV Compound, & finished out the year at the St. George (#33) in Cholon. Left 9/70. Paid a couple of visits to the 218th Med. Disp. (#62). I shot hundreds of photos while I was there & this map is a great aid in finding the locations for an upcoming return trip. Thanks.

I was stationed at 3rd Field Hospital Jan 1, 1969 to October 21, 1969. Before that, I spend a couple months with the 25th at Cu Chi. I worked in the Renal Unit, and remember very little, except for some of the Doctors and Nurses. We were pretty tight up there, and took care of some seriously wounded guys. Seemed like a lot of them died, and we were working around the clock. I have some pictures of the hospital and the Renal Unit. I also remember that we did a kidney transplant on a young Vietnamese kid, using his mother as the donor.

Would like to hook up and know what happened to the staff. I remember the following:

1. Doctor Maken 2. Doctor Sloan 3. Captian Keller - nurse 4.

Besides Kim Binh, Dhan, Phuoc and Col. Heiger, I don't recognize any of the other names. I was first assigned to the 9ML drug lab at Cam Ranh next to the 6th Conv. Ctr. in Sept. of '71. I was transferred to the main lab at Long Binh when the drug lab was closed just after Christmas of '71. At Long Binh, they didn't need any techs, so I was a duty driver until April of '72. Folks I DO remember...Capt. Dave Butcher, Capt. Jewell, Lt. Dinapoli, SFC Millican, 1Sgt Daniels, Bobby Dillard, Richard C. Jordan, Zale (we called him Pineapple), Bruce Honts, Chris Warden, Jim Giordano, Pedersen, SSG Terry Miles.

Words are far too inadequate to express my relief and gratitude that Kim Binh, Danh, and Phuoc survived that mess after we left.

Dear 9ML'ers

In these trying times, it's difficult to keep track of all the belligerent right-wingnuts urging our troops and our nation on to bigger, better, more comprehensive and expensive wars, crusades, struggles, and fistfights. So, the Nation’s Oldest Newspaper (tm) has taken it upon itself to compile the definitive compendium of that charming species known as Chickenhawks. Their Motto: “Let’s you and him go fight, I’ll hold your coat.”

The Gazette’s Chickenhawk Database can be found at
